Often referred to as “children’s ebooks,” “picture ebooks,” “photo books,” and similar monikers, fixed-layout ebooks are visually-rich layouts that offer much more than standard EPUB and KF8 format ebooks for iPad, iPhone, Kindle, Kindle Fire, Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo, and more. Fixed-layout ebooks behave very much like PDFs or even digital magazines, displaying the design, typography, and page geometry exactly as designed on all devices. This specialty type of ebook tends to be very reliant on imagery, either or both as inline graphics or page background images, and sometimes even as spread-spanning images. They support advanced typographic control and pixel-precise layout, and they can contain read-a-long, on-demand, or ambient audio. Limited interactivity may also be achieved through JavaScript integration. Objects can be placed anywhere on the page, aligned relative to one another, with absolute precision, and type control goes far beyond standard, flowable EPUB in the forms of support for any font (with embedding), accurate line wrapping, hyphenation, leading control, tracking (letter spacing), and even multiple columns. Fixed-layout EPUBs may have real sidebars, note or tip boxes, and live text image captions. And, like flowable EPUBs, all the text-even in such special features-is searchable, live text. All of these features make fixed-layout ebooks ideal for such projects as children’s books, cookbooks, travel journals, photography and design books, game guides, and any other project where page presentation is important to reader experience and sales. ePublishing with InDesign: Creating Fixed-Layout eBooks will teach you: Understanding Fixed-Layout eBooks Planning a Fixed-Layout eBook Creating Fixed-Layout in InDesign Adapting the HTML Editing the CSS Adding Advanced Features Creating Read Aloud Narration Creating Fixed-Layout for Kindle Converting Fixed-Layout for Nook Creating Fixed-Layout for Sony Reader Creating Fixed-Layout for

Infested

Infested

$16

Bed bugs. Few words strike such fear in the minds of travelers. In cities around the world, lurking beneath the plush blankets of otherwise pristine-looking hotel beds are tiny bloodthirsty beasts just waiting for weary wanderers to surrender to a vulnerable slumber. Though bed bugs today have infested the globe, the common bed bug is not a new pest at all. Indeed, as Brooke Borel reveals in this unusual history, this most-reviled species may date back over 250,000 years, wreaking havoc on our collective psyche while even inspiring art, literature, and music-in addition to vexatious red welts. In Infested, Borel introduces readers to the biological and cultural histories of these amazingly adaptive insects, and the myriad ways in which humans have responded to them. She travels to meet with scientists who are rearing bed bug colonies-even by feeding them with their own blood (ouch!)-and to the stages of musicals performed in honor of the pests. She explores the history of bed bugs and their apparent disappearance in the 1950s after the introduction of DDT, charting how current infestations have flourished in direct response to human chemical use as well as the ease of global travel. She also introduces us to the economics of bed bug infestations, from hotels to homes to office buildings, and the expansive industry that has arisen to combat them. Hiding during the day in the nooks and seams of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, dresser tables, wallpaper, or any clutter around a bed, bed bugs are thriving and eager for their next victim. By providing fascinating details on bed bug science and behavior as well as a captivating look into the lives of those devoted to researching or eradicating them, Infested is sure to inspire at least a nibble of respect for these tenacious creatures-while also ensuring that you will peek beneath the sheets with prickly apprehension.

Mother West Wind's Children (Illustrated Edition)

Mother West Wind’s Children (Illustrated Edition)

$2.99

Why are Peter Rabbit’s ears so long? And why does Reddy Fox have no friends? Learn the answers to these and other mysteries about the beloved animals of the Green Meadow in this time-honored collection of fifteen tales. This classic title, companion to the perennial favorite Old Mother West Wind, was first published 105 years ago and is now being reissued as an fully-adaptable ebook for Kindle, Nook, and Kobo. This edition of the book contains seven original illustrations, rejuvenated, and three additional, animal illustrations that are unique to this edition of the book. Thornton Waldo Burgess (January 14, 1874 – June 5, 1965) was a conservationist and author of children’s stories. Burgess loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years in books and his newspaper column, “Bedtime Stories”. He was sometimes known as the Bedtime Story-Man. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for the daily newspaper column. Born in Sandwich, Massachusetts, Burgess was the son of Caroline F. Haywood and Thornton W. Burgess Sr, a direct descendant of Thomas Burgess, one of the first Sandwich settlers in 1637. Thornton W. Burgess, Sr, died the same year his son was born, and the young Thornton Burgess was brought up by his mother in Sandwich. They both lived in humble circumstances with relatives or paying rent. As a youth, he worked year round in order to earn money. Some of his jobs included tending cows, picking trailing arbutus or berries, shipping water lilies from local ponds, selling candy and trapping muskrats. William C. Chipman, one of his employers, lived on Discovery Hill Road, a wildlife habitat of woodland and wetland. This habitat became the setting of many stories in which Burgess refers to Smiling Pool and the Old Briar Patch. Graduating from Sandwich High School in 1891, Burgess briefly attended a business college in Boston from 1892 to 1893, living in Somerville, Massachusetts

Rat: How the World's Most Notorious Rodent Clawed Its Way to the Top

Rat: How the World’s Most Notorious Rodent Clawed Its Way to the Top

$7.99

From its origins in the swamps of Southeast Asia to its role in the medieval Black Death to its unshakeable niche in modern urban centers, the rat has incredible evolutionary advantages. Combining biology with history, and social commentary with firsthand experience, Rat dispels the myths and exposes the little-known facts about the ubiquitous rodent. Plague carrier, city vermin, and an out-and-out menace to modern man, the rat, like death and taxes, is a certain fixture in humankind’s history. Rats are found in virtually every nook and cranny of the globe and their numbers are ever increasing. Rats are always adapting and they seem to outwit any attempts by humans to wipe them out. What makes the rat such a worthy adversary and how has it risen to the top of the animal kingdom? Rats have been discovered living in meat lockers. The rats in there simply grew longer hair, fatter bodies, and nested in the carcasses they fed upon. A female rat can, under good conditions, have well over 100,000 babies in her lifetime. A rat can fall fifty feet onto pavement and skitter away unharmed. A rat’s jaws can exert a force more than twenty times as powerful as a human’s. The front side of a rat’s incisors are as hard as some grades of steel. In Rat: How the World’s Most Notorious Rodent Clawed Its Way to the Top, Jerry Langton explores the history, myth, physiology, habits, and psyche of the rat and even speculates on the future of the rat and how they might evolve over the next few hundred years.
